Last week, after reading up about the solar eclipse, my plan was to get up into the mountains and shoot from there. Then on Friday, I read that the best viewing areas would be in places like New Mexico, Utah or California. After joking with some co-workers about making a road trip for the weekend, they said “You should do it. Why not?” Saturday, May 19, 2011. 11:00 am… Hmm… ya know… they’re right. Why not!!!??? And by noon, I was out the door for a 7 hour drive to Albuquerque, NM. I didn’t have much of a game plan as to where I was going, or where I was staying. It was just me, some Bruce Springsteen, and the open road. I was headed to Albuquerque.
As Bruce and I were singing at the top of our lungs through the desert, everything seemed to come together. An old friend of mine from the early days at Integer, reached out and invited me to stay with her and her husband. I couldn’t thank them enough! They joined me for the solar event and drove me to the volcano fields on the West side of town. It was the perfect spot to view this rare event. So this blog post is dedicated to John and Marci for their generous hospitality. It was the perfect weekend. By Monday morning, I was back on the road heading to Denver for a 3:00 meeting at work. I made it with 30 minutes to spare. Whew! Stay tuned for pictures from the rest of the trip. And remember, if you like it, share it!
*UPDATE* Due to some confusion on a few of the photos, I thought I would clarify. What you are seeing in the box that my friends, and myself, are holding up is a piece of #10 welder’s glass. These photos are of the actual solar eclipse looking through this piece of glass which is green. Then color corrected. Hope that makes sense.

Nice work, Steve.
Next, cover the Balloon Festival down there…If you can stand getting up at 3am, you’ll get some outstanding prelaunch shots. Fire and vivid colors against a night sky.

FABULOUS! Love the succession of pics of the eclipse…and what looks like an eerily bright crescent moon setting behind the hills. <3
