Abandoned Church Behind the Camouflage of Nature

Abandoned Church Abandoned Church Behind the Camouflage of Nature

Sitting amongst the overgrown trees, alone, and in the dark. An abandoned church sits quietly, with the occasional wind blowing through it’s broken windows. It was 9:30pm when my headlights revealed the church behind the camouflage of nature. It was beautiful. (Ok… that’s it for my creative writing skills, now on to the story!)

My plan was to scout this abandoned, Iowa church during the day and photograph it at night. But… it worked out in the reverse. My friend, Eric Shumate, and I pulled up about 9:30pm. We thought that we would just take a look as we made our way to the motel. But it was a clear, and beautiful night so we decided to get my shot and come back in the morning. We went inside with our headlamps a-blazin’, took one look and said… “we need to be extremely careful in here”. The place seemed to be decaying before our eyes. And yes, the bell tower had an extreme lean to it. We placed my 500w Profoto B1 light inside the church. Eric took the other one and made his way through the woods behind it. From my viewpoint as I waited for Eric, all I can hear behind the church is the breaking of branches and the occasional swear word. So a big shout out to Eric for helping make my vision of this beautiful place come to life. Tune in next week for the photos taken during the day.
