*UPDATE* As of May 2013, the abandoned church no longer exists.
I must have driven past this abandoned church twice a year for the past 17 years near Lincoln, Nebraska. And each time I do, I always say to myself that I’m going to stop and take photos someday. That day has come.
Planning my route using satellite photos of the area, I knew exactly where I needed to go to get to the old church. And it looked like I can get through, past the old, torn down motel. I turned off the highway and onto what looked like an old driveway. That led to an old abandoned gift shop. Windows broken out, no doors, and still looked like it had merchandise on the shelves. It was an eerie feeling. But I was on a mission to get to the church. “I was on a mission from God.” 🙂
Anyway, after driving through overgrown weeds, bushes, and through the torn down motel, I made it to the church. After taking several photos, I thought to myself, I couldn’t just leave now without taking a peek inside. So I got up to the side window and yelled “Hello?” Ok I’ll admit, I was a little freaked out. But when I looked to my left, I saw the organ. My fears turned into excitement. I hoisted myself and my gear in through the window and spent a good 45 minutes snapping away. When it was all said and done, I realized as I walked out the front door… that would have been the easier way to get in! 🙂
