Abandoned Mine at Night

Abandoned Mine at Night

I headed up Friday afternoon to my favorite place in the mountains, Leadville, CO. It’s been a while since I stayed at Bill and Marlene’s cabin and thought I’d revisit a few of my favorite spots to photograph the Fall colors. Like the aspens with the Milky Way, or some of the abandoned mines. But by Saturday afternoon, I wasn’t feeling it. I thought to myself, I’ve shot this before, it’s been done before… But there was one shot I always wanted to get. And this was the perfect weekend for it. Photographing my favorite abandoned mine at night… with the stars.

Armed with a new camera body, a 14mm lens, and a 500 watt Profoto B1 (which I call the Light Cannon), I headed up to the mine with my friend Marlene. Now you wouldn’t know it by the photos but it is pitch black up there. Perfect! The photos taken are 20 second exposures. During that time, I had Marlene fire off the Light Cannon from a distance. BOOM! I think we were both seeing spots after the first test blast. But I was able to dial it down to get my shots.
